Renton

Renton

Renton, whose hilarious slogan is “ahead of the curves,” in reference to the traffic-ridden ‘s-curves’ is a southern suburb of Seattle and Bellevue. It surrounds the southern tip of Lake Washington, with Bellevue and Tukwila to its north on the east and west sides of the lake, respectively, and Kent to the south of it. A small tidbit to add to Renton’s geography is that the freeways that all come together there are one of the reasons that it is a desirable place for retailers and businesses to set up shop. Interstate 5 on the west side of the lake and Interstate 405, which runs down the east side of the lake meet in Renton, while State Route 167, which connects the southeastern suburbs to the main interstates. At this crossroads in Renton is a large selection of stores anchored by the only IKEA in the area.

The location is also favorable for businesses, and it is home to a Boeing factory, as well as a Paccar factory. While online business Classmates.com has recently vacated a large space, the economy continues to grow with others taking its place, including Providence Health System and gaming industry leader Wizards of the Coast. NFL team the Seattle Seahawks recently moved their headquarters from the north end of the lake in Kirkland to a state of the art facility in Renton, making it the second largest facility in the NFL. The Seahawk facility, along with Jimi Hendrix’s grave are two of the biggest tourist draws to Renton.

Renton, in addition to its industrial areas and big box stores has an old-style downtown, with walk-able streets, small shops and restaurants, making it a rather pleasant place to call home. More and more people are calling it home; too, as there have been a number of new residential buildings going up in the area.
