City Parks

One of Seattle’s greatest features is its natural beauty and the many parks that are spread throughout the city only enhance that, not only with their own greenery, but also by offering a chance to view the city from some of its best angles.

Volunteer Park is located in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. The park is often referred to by the best known resident of the adjacent cemetery, home to martial arts star Bruce Lee’s grave. The park is a huge place with a many amenities and a large reservoir. It is home to Seattle’s Asian Art Museum, and also has a greenhouse and conservatory. There you will also find a water tower that offers a 360-degree view of the city and surrounding area from the top of its 180 steps. The tower is free and open to the public during park (daylight) hours.

Atop one of Seattle’s other great hill neighborhoods, Queen Anne, is Kerry Park, a stripe of green along the edge of the hill. A short bus ride or a long but scenic walk from downtown, the park is a great place to rest tired feet and admire the scene. From here there is a view of two of Seattle’s most notable landmarks, the Space Needle and Mt. Rainier. The park is set up for gazing, with benches along the top ledge as well as a coin-operated telescope for better views. A totem pole offers additional tourist photo ops, while tennis courts and a children’s play area round out the parks neighborhood feel. For a slightly different view, continue down the street, where there is a second viewpoint and also a chance to duck into one of the smallest but most beautiful parks in Seattle, Parsons’ Gardens.

Completing the triangle of parks with great views is Jose Rizal Park. Hidden behind the shining beacon atop Beacon Hill that is the Pac Med Building (a.k.a. Amazon headquarters), this park provides amazing views of the Seattle Waterfront, the sports stadiums and all of downtown from the southeast. The park is terraced, allowing for a variety of amenities including an amphitheater, covered picnic tables and a mosaic art feature with a peephole through which you can see all of downtown.
